“Ethics in Action: Navigating Legal Integrity and Accountability In the Modern Justice System”

The Faculty of Shariah and Law of Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta

Indonesia, August 5th, 2025

BACKGROUND

Sharia, as a core tenet of Islam, plays a vital role in the lives of Muslims. It provides an ethic-moral and legal foundation that guides individual behavior and societal norms. Consequently, many Muslims align their lives with the principles of Sharia and its applied jurisprudence, Fikih.

In a broader legal context, law enforcement ethics refer to the moral and behavioral standards that legal professionals, such as judges, police officers, and prosecutors, are expected to uphold in the course of their duties. These ethics aim to ensure fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory law enforcement. Upholding such principles is essential for fostering public trust, preventing abuse of power, and maintaining the integrity of the legal system.

Law enforcement ethics play a crucial role in several areas. They help build public confidence in legal institutions through the consistent application of justice. They serve as safeguards against misconduct, ensuring that law enforcers act with integrity and accountability. Ethical conduct also ensures that justice is realized for all members of society, regardless of background or status. Moreover, a strong ethical foundation contributes to improving the overall quality and effectiveness of law enforcement.

Given the evolving challenges faced by legal systems today, strengthening ethics, legal integrity, and accountability has become increasingly important. In this context, the Faculty of Sharia and Law at Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University Jakarta is organizing the 9th International Conference on Law and Justice (ICLJ). With the theme “Ethics in Action: Navigating Legal Integrity and Accountability in the Modern Justice System,” the conference aims to explore the dynamic relationship between Sharia, legal practice, and the ethical responsibilities of law enforcement in the contemporary world.
